It's been said the world only has enough crude oil left in the ground to power us for another 50-100 years. So by 50 years time, the price of oil will be so expensive, that oil consumption will be way down, just by the principles of Supply vs Demand. If Gore wants to see consumption reduced by 90% in 45 years, he'll probably get it.

I think that metric is based on how much oil can be retrieved cheaply and with current technology. If I'm not mistaken, there 100 years supply just in the tar sands in North and South America. That oil became retrievable given the relatively high prices which have been in the market for the past several years. That doesn't account for oil which is in other places like up by the Arctic. Likely there is oil many other places we haven't yet discovered. The stuff is created from past biomass which was far more substantial than the amount of oil we have seen to date. Probably we have plenty more yet to be discovered.
