New Yorkers just proved themselves unworthy of living in a world of personal responsibility. The majority of people in NYC approve of the ban against trans fats which just went into effect. Local news emphasized that the majority of New Yorkers advocated this ban because trans fats are bad for people's health. But that's not the issue. The issue is what are the circumstances under which government should act and how far should it go into controlling people's lives. There is no reason why government must act to ban places like McDonalds if people take responsibility for their actions. And many do. Many people would never dream of allowing their kids to eat at a McDonalds or other fast food place precisely because they want to teach them to avoid trans fats. Yet those people advocate this ban as well. The reason? They believe those who fail to act similarly are stupid. They believe they know what's right for others and they should act legislatively and otherwise to control those stupid people's behavior. And when government gets into this act, Big Brother has truly arrived.
