Senate Republicans refused to consider a resolution by Lautenberg and Corzine (both D-NJ) which would have honored
Bruce Springsteen's career. Both Senators were miffed and confused at the refusal. A spokesman for Lautenberg said, "Resolutions like this pass all the time in the U.S. Senate, usually by unanimous consent." But should anyone be surprised Republicans have no desire to honor Springsteen? Had he simply been a musician with a long noteworthy career, the resolution might have passed with unanimous consent but Mr. Bruce chose long ago to transcend his art form and express his views not only about political issues but about specific candidates. Artists who choose such a course should not be surprised to find a cold shoulder from the other side of the aisle. Backers in the Senate should be no more surprised by the treatment Springsteen got than they should be surprised the Republican controlled congress doesn't want to hold George Soros up for man of the year honors!
